STUDENT LIFE

HEAR THEIR STORIES.

From current students navigating school life today to alumni who have carried those experiences into adulthood, these stories reflect the challenges, growth, and realities that shape the SUN community.

Daniel Kim - Toronto Metropolitan University

My parents are overseas, so when I needed a car I had to figure everything out myself. I went into a dealership without really understanding leasing, interest, add-ons, or what I should be negotiating. By the time I realized I had agreed to things I didn’t need, it was already signed. I wish there had been somewhere I could ask before making such a big decision.

Amira Hassan - York University

Finding my first apartment was way harder than I expected. I didn’t know what landlords were allowed to ask for, what should be in a lease, or what my rights were as a tenant. Everyone gives you different advice and you’re basically expected to figure it out while trying to stay on top of school.

Marcus Thompson - Humber Polytechnic

I got into a minor car accident and had no idea what I was supposed to do. There were tow trucks, insurance questions, paperwork, and people telling me different things while I was already stressed. I remember thinking there should be one place students can call that just tells you what to do next.

Priya Shah - University of Toronto

Coming to Canada as an international student meant learning an entirely new system. Study permits, work rules, immigration documents and deadlines can get confusing really quickly. My family couldn’t help because they didn’t know the Canadian system either, so most of the time I was searching online and hoping the information was right.

Jason Lee - York University Alumni

When I was in university, every problem had a different place you had to search for help. Housing was one place, jobs were another, legal questions somewhere else, and sometimes you didn’t even know who to ask. If something like SUN had existed, having one network to turn to would have saved me a lot of time and mistakes.

Natalie Brown - University of Toronto Alumni

I remember graduating and realizing how quickly the support around you disappears. Suddenly you’re figuring out your career, finances, housing and adulthood at the same time. I wish there had been an organization that stayed with students through that transition instead of support ending when school ended.
